Do I need lithium battery labels on outbound shipments?
For most refurbished devices shipped with the battery contained in the equipment (e.g., phones, laptops, tablets), no lithium battery sticker is required if all of the following are met:
- Battery capacity is within limits:
- Cells ≤ 20 Wh
- Batteries ≤ 100 Wh
- Maximum 2 batteries or 4 cells per package
- Maximum 2 packages per shipment
- Device is packed in strong, rigid packaging and protected from activation
When these conditions are fulfilled, the shipment qualifies as UN3481 PI967 Section II and can be sent without lithium warning labels.
Not covered: batteries shipped alone, batteries packed separately with equipment, damaged/defective batteries, or power banks.

What packaging should I use for DHL Express shipments? Are there any restrictions?
To ensure smooth processing of your shipments in DHL’s network, please follow these guidelines:
- Avoid using black stretch wrap/foil whenever possible, as it can interfere with DHL’s automated scanners due to reflections
- Always place the shipping label on the top surface of the parcel (not on the side), so it can be scanned correctly
DHL has confirmed that incorrect label placement is the main cause of scanning issues, but certain packaging materials (such as black wrapping) can increase the risk of delays.
Following these guidelines helps ensure your shipments are processed automatically and avoids manual handling or delays.
How does DHL Express calculate volumetric weight?
DHL charges the higher of the actual weight or the volumetric (dimensional) weight.
Formula:
Length × Width × Height (cm) ÷ 5000 = Volumetric Weight (kg)Example:
40 × 30 × 20 cm → 24 000 ÷ 5000 = 4.8 kg
