The Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) is an environmental policy instrument from the EU to manage the after-use phase of products and foster circular economy. Amongst other obligations, producers have to register, submit volume data, and pay EPR fees for certain products categories (electrical & electronic equipment, batteries, textiles, packaging) in each EU market that they sell to. Producers are, therefore, held responsible for the waste originating from selling certain products and the EPR fees are mostly used to cover the costs of waste management.
Specific obligations and processes differ between markets, with some requiring, for example, the additional appointment of an authorised representative.
Non-compliance may lead to significant penalties (depending on the severity of the violation and member state) and suspension from the refurbed marketplace.
